Episode 7: Classic Artillery

Battle your friends with large water cannons

Introduction

You and some of your friends have found some long range water cannons and have decided to have the ultimate water battle. The group of you will now spread out and launch water bombs at each other. If hit with a bomb you will leave the game. The sole player to be left standing will be considered to be the winner.

Using the Console

Creating text games is interesting, but my goal was also to present the game in a way that would simulate a teletype machine as close as possible. This is why the game uses my console.

My Teletype Emulator is designed to simulate playing the game on an old teletype machine, down to the dot matrix output. Anybody who has used an old printer knows how slow they were. They were also noisy, but out of the goodness of my heart, I decided to leave the noise out.

For getting input from the user, I decided to go with a fancy LCD model, in which what you type will be send to a LCD display for your approval before being transmitted to the machine. Unlike real machines, my terminal is intelligent and will only let you enter something when the program is requesting input. Any other typing is ignored!

Playing the Game

First you must decide how many players are going to participate. Players can be controlled by humans or by computer but there must be at least one human player.

After the number of players have been selected, you must then determine which players are human and which players will be controlled by the computer. This is done by answering the "is player human" prompt. Human players will require you to type in a name. Computer players have names automatically assigned to them.

The game loops through all the players that are still in the game. Human players must provide an angle, a power, and if you want to watch the bullets path. The power determines how fast the bullet is going when it leaves the cannon. To gain a better understanding of how the bullet will travel, answer yes to the show path option. This will give you coordinate information for the bullet as it progresses.

When a bullet hits the ground, any cannon within a certain radius of the impact point will be taken out of the game. The game ends when there is only one player left in the game. Likewise, if all humans have been knocked out of the game, the game will be over.

System Requirements

This game is requires Java 1.1 or better to run. Browsers that support 1.1 tend to be 4.x or better versions. Windows XP users may have to download a Java plug in to use Java applets.
