Episode 25: Classic 5D8

A simple game using Eight Sided Dice

Page Last Updated: April 1, 2006

Introduction

I created this game quite a while ago when I was dog/house sitting for my aunt. I based this game on the many different dice games that I seen for 6 sided dice. 8 sided dice are fairly common for many board based role-playing games. A dice game based around 8 sided dice. 8 sided dice look like diamonds and generate a number between 1 and 8. Your goal is to roll 5 of these dice in an attempt to form specific combinations of which there are 17.

Using the Console

Creating text games is interesting, but my goal was also to present the game in a way that would simulate a teletype machine as close as possible. This is why the game uses my console.

My Teletype Emulator is designed to simulate playing the game on an old teletype machine, down to the dot matrix output. Anybody who has used an old printer knows how slow they were. They were also noisy, but out of the goodness of my heart, I decided to leave the noise out.

For getting input from the user, I decided to go with a fancy LCD model, in which what you type will be send to a LCD display for your approval before being transmitted to the machine. Unlike real machines, my terminal is intelligent and will only let you enter something when the program is requesting input. Any other typing is ignored!

Playing the Game

Five dice are rolled. You are allowed to re-roll some or all of the dice up to three times (for a total of four rolls). To enter the dice to re-roll, simply type the number of the dice (not the rolled number) separating them by comma's if there is more than one. If you want to keep all the dice just hit the return key.

Once the four rolls have been made, you then select the score slot to place the roll into. Each of the 17 slots can only be used once. The game continues until all 17 slots
are filled.

System Requirements

This game is requires Java 1.1 or better to run. Browsers that support 1.1 tend to be 4.x or better versions. Windows XP users may have to download a Java plug in to use Java applets.
